On October 2nd, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga attended and delivered a speech at the General Debate of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly themed “United Nations: A Roadmap for Peace, Security and Respect for Human Rights”.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said that since its establishment 70 years ago, the UN has become the centre for the coordination of global efforts in tacklingcommon challenges, making significant contributions to the protection of international peace and security, promoting development and protecting human rights.

The UN always upholds and promotes purposes and principles of the UN Charter, particularly principles of respect for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-threat or use of forces, and peaceful settlement of international disputes.

Facing new challenges, the Head of the Vietnam Mission stated that the UN need to continue to play a central role in addressing global issues such as conflicts, nuclear weapon disarmament, climate change, terrorism, violent extremism, hunger and poverty, social inequality and working towards sustainable development. To do that, Vietnam believes that the UN, including the Security Council, need to continue its reform to becoming more efficient, democratic and transparent.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga affirmed that Vietnam welcomed the UN Agenda 2030 on sustainable development and pledged to do its utmost to successfully implement the program. Vietnam attaches great importance to the central role of people, always guarantee common interests of the people, take care, respect and protect human rights.

The Ambassador highlighted the importance of the strong global partnership and call on developed countries to support developing ones in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), especially through financial supports, technology transfer, and human resource building.

At regional level, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said that Vietnam is joining hands with other regional countries in building the ASEAN Community and promoting common development of the region. The Ambassador emphasized that regional peace and stability, which includes ensuring peace, security and freedom of navigation in the East Sea, is the prerequisite for development. Therefore, Vietnam will spare no effort together with relevant countries to settle disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, which includes the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS), fully and actively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the East Sea (DOC), working towards the early formation of a Code of Conduct (COC).
